Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for hours when multiple of them entered the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations affecting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend floated over the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and participants so that such operations become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
