At least 13 people perish and ninety-eight hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” declared the head of state.

The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose time in office finished the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The building of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing predictions to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled ongoing questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an immediate pause in the building and running of all similar projects.

This halt was requested until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."

In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and management of these national undertakings.
